January 10th–a Special Birthday

on January 10, 2012

My Mother, Lucia Marie Arras Benington was born on January 10th, 1923.  That means that January 10th,  is her birthday.  Even though she is gone now, I think of her on this day, as I do everyday,  and I remember so many things about her.  Your Great Granma Lucia was your daddy’s granma.  You will need to ask him about some of the things that he remembers about her.  Have him tell you just one story today about one of his favorite memories.

Birthdays were always a special celebration when I was growing up.  I remember my birthdays well, but I don’t remember my mom’s celebrations as much,  probably because she never made a big deal about herself.  She always put herself in the background and provided everything for the rest of us.

The one thing that I do remember is that she LOVED chocolate cake.  Her birthday cake was always chocolate!  In fact my mom had a “sweet tooth”!

Defination of “sweet tooth”

n. Informal

A fondness or craving for sweets.

She loved all kinds of sweets and she had little hidding places in the house where she would stash them away so that my dad, my sisters and I could not find them.  Her favorites…ju ju fruits, heath bars or toffee, and chocolate-chocolate-chocolate.

My dad often gave my mom Ju Ju candy for her birthday.

I think I will celebrate her birthday by enjoying some of her favorite candy..and share the moment in my thoughts with her.

Jujubes are small, chewy candies in assorted fruit flavors of cherry, lemon, lime, orange and grape.
Jujubes were first produced some time before 1920. The jujube is an edible berry that grows in the tropics. But the name of the berry has nothing to do with the make-up of the candy, which is more likely related to one of the basic ingredients of both Jujubes and Jujyfruits, ju-ju gum.
